Huma Akram, wife of former Pakistani cricketer Wasim Akram, died at the Apollo Hospital here Sunday morning after battling for life for the past five days

According to hospital officials, Huma breathed her last around 9.45 a.m.

Huma was suffering from sepsis (an inflammation of several tissues, including blood leading to Kidney failure) and was admitted to Apollo Hospital Tuesday after developing complications mid-air while on her way to Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore from Pakistan.

She was accompanied by Wasim Akram.

At Apollo Hospital, she was in the intensive care unit (ICU) since then and died Sunday without regaining consciousness.

Arrangements are being made to take her body back to Pakistan, the sources said.

The line between victory and defeat is sometimes a thin wire. If not for an overhead camera cable, Royal Challengers Bangalore might not have lost their opening game of the Champions League Twenty20 against Cape Cobras. JP Duminy was on 21 when he lofted Anil Kumble towards Ross Taylor at long-off but the ball deflected off a wire and the catch was spilt. The ball was called dead but the game came alive after that as Duminy slaughtered the bowling to win the game for Cobras with an unbeaten 99.

That defeat left Bangalore needing to beat Otago to qualify for the next round and today the home side was not hindered by freaky speed breakers. Everything went according to plan. Kallis solid all-round performance ensured that it did, and he was the rock around which the other stroke-makers sculpted their crowd-pleasing acts.

Kallis' effort was typical: a solid half-century, which was overshadowed by more aggressive cameos from his team-mates, followed by an unspectacular but incisive spell with the new ball that broke the back of Otago's chase. He has turned in such performances for a long time now but he still has his critics. When Kallis, one of the game's great allrounders across all formats, was dropped from South Africa's squad for the inaugural World Twenty20 in 2007, not many fans were aghast. He was also criticised after the first IPL in India the following year, when Bangalore finished second from bottom. Even Ray Jennings, who had just taken over as coach in the second season, talked about challenging Kallis.

Before the second season of the IPL in South Africa, Jennings had a chat with Kallis about his role and mindset and the allrounder said he was not only hurt by last season's efforts but aimed to end the new season as the best batsman in the format. He went on to have a good season and has started this Champions League Twenty20 in similar fashion.

Kallis' solidity today allowed Robin Uthappa to provide Bangalore's innings with an aggressive start and Virat Kohli and Ross Taylor to give it a sensational finish. He went about his innings with trademark rigour. There were a couple of sixes towards the end of his innings, and a flamboyant carve over point, but for the most part Kallis ticked along with ones and twos.

At the end of the game Kallis shook hands with his captain Anil Kumble, walked away quietly, mumbled a few words during the post-match ceremony and didn't even come to the press conference. Uthappa came instead and was inevitably asked about the prior questioning of Kallis' place in the side and in the format. "He has answered your own question," was Uthappa's quick response. "He is a phenomenal cricketer, a world-class cricketer. The skills he showed today to take one catch, score 70-odd runs and take three wickets, just shows that he is a champion cricketer."

It's a cross that Kallis might have to carry forever. Cricket fans furiously debate over his "great" allrounder status. They murmur: Oh he bats in a bubble, never changes gears and never quite dominates as he seems to be capable of. They even call him selfish. In 2007 the former South African batsman Barry Richards called him "one-dimensional" and added that "he lacks the ability to sum up a match situation and adapt accordingly."

Kallis wasn't shaken though. "They can say what they like about me," he had said. "I just don't care, not in the slightest. I've realised what works for me and I'm going to keep playing to my strengths." He did exactly that against Otago and all he had to say at the end of it was that today was his day.

Retired England all-rounder Andrew Flintoff has revealed that he didn't want to play the Test series in India after last year's Mumbai terror attacks but was forced to come by his home Board, which was "scared" of offending the cash-rich BCCI.

In his autobiography 'Ashes to Ashes', excerpts of which have come out in the 'Daily Mail', Flintoff has lashed out at the England and Wales Cricket Board for letting the players down.

England were playing a one-day series when terrorists carried out attacks in Mumbai, prompting the visitors to leave the series and return home. The final two one-dayers of the seven-match series were not played.

The English returned for the two-Test series after a few weeks but not before many a brainstorming sessions over the security situation in India.

Flintoff said he and some others were against resuming the tour but were pressurised into agreeing by the ECB.

"The ECB told us about the money they would lose by not playing the Test series and they emphasised the impact that would have on cricket in England, on county cricket and grassroots cricket. Basically they were telling us that if we went home some lad in Preston might not be able to play cricket," Flintoff writes in the book.

"From the word go I thought that trying to put that sort of pressure on us was wrong. The ECB's desire to forge closer links with the Board of Control for Cricket in India had been widely publicised.

"The Indian organisation had become very powerful with the success of the IPL and the launch of the Champions League Twenty 20 tournaments. It was also an open secret that the ECB wanted to get the Indian players over for their own Twenty20 tournament and I got the impression they were frightened to death of jeopardising that," he added.

Flintoff further said that he "asked them (the ECB) outright whether this was about money and they denied it, but I wasn't convinced then and nothing since has persuaded me otherwise."

The all-rounder, who has turned freelancer after refusing an ECB incremental contract, revealed "overriding feeling" among the players was in favour of going home.

Flintoff said then skipper Kevin Pietersen was eager to play the series and the relations between the two also soured to an extent as a result of that.

"Kevin was very keen to play the Tests but some of the lads were against it and they gave their reasons. At that stage most of the lads didn't want to come back. Stories about terrorists targeting westerners didn't help. A few of the lads were genuinely scared," he recalled.

"Peter Moores (then England coach) asked me to ring Kev, which I did, but the conversation was a bit strained. Kev said a lot of the lads had agreed to go back and asked me why I wouldn't do the same," he said.

The English team stayed in UAE for a training camp before coming back for the series and Flintoff said it was here that the ECB stepped up the pressure after a round of meetings.

"About six of us were left in the room and we were being pressed for a decision. I told them I couldn't give them one.

They had to give me some time to digest what we'd just been told.

"We knew there would be a fall-out from the Press and I'd be putting my career on the line, not to mention an IPL contract. But finances didn't come into it. It was important I made the right decision," he said.

"I felt as though I'd lost. I was being backed into doing something I didn't want to do. Back in the meeting room I told everyone that I was agreeing to go back for my team-mates.

Flintoff also lambasted the ECB for agreeing to the Stanford USD 20 million winner-takes-all Twenty20 match organised by Texan billionaire Allen Stanford, who is now facing charges of fraud.

"All the talk about England helping the development of West Indies cricket was absolute rubbish. We should have come out and said that we were there as mercenaries, playing for money. It was nothing to do with playing for England or helping Caribbean cricket," he said.

"The sole purpose was to play one Twenty20 match for USD 20m. I struggled with that concept and I think most of the lads felt the same. I don't play for England for money and the whole Stanford concept didn't excite me," he added.

Harbhajan Singh today found himself in a fresh controversy after jabbing at a photographer at the Bangalore International Airport before leaving for the tri-series in Sri Lanka.

The feisty off-spinner, who very often finds himself in the news for all the wrong reasons, jabbed at a cameraman after the camera had hit him on the head while he was taking his luggage out from a car before entering the airport.

Harbhajan gave an angry stare at the cameraman even as a security personnel tried to push back the hordes of lensmen who had virtually mobbed the cricketer.

The 29-year-old Punjab spinner has a rather dubious disciplinary record, having been penalised for various offences during his career.

Harbhajan was accused of racially abusing Australian all-rounder Andrew Symonds in Sydney and the 2007 'monkey-gate' incident snowballed into a major crisis, threatening to tear apart the cricketing world.

In the same year, Harbhajan was banned for the remaining Indian Premier League matches after the infamous 'slap-gate', which saw him slapping his India teammate S Sreesanth in Mohali.

After the 'slap-gate' incident, Harbhajan had promised to mend his way and keep a check on his temper.

Calcutta: Former India captain Sourav Ganguly will represent Bhukailash Sporting at the next Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) working committee. The club took the decision at a meeting on Monday.

The working committee comprises 40 clubs and by rotation it is Bhukailash’s turn this year. General secretary Mintu Das, however, will represent the club at the annual general meeting on July 31. The former India captain is unlikely to attend the AGM from any other club in the current circumstances.

Meanwhile, the CAB ruling group, led by Jagmohan Dalmiya, on Monday announced an unchanged panel.

ICC decision

Calcutta: The ICC on Monday clarified the rules relating to referrals of low catch decisions to the third umpire after a row erupted in the second Ashes Test at Lord’s, saying that the on-field umpires have the authority to decide which catch to refer to. “It is simply a question of whether either on-field umpire is able to make the call himself or needs advice from third umpire. If he is confident of the decision then he will make it himself regardless of how near or far away the incident took place,” Crowe said.

Chandigarh: The Punjab Cricket Association on Monday appointed former cricketer and national selector Bhupinder Singh (Sr.) as coach for the state Ranji team for 2009-10. Bhupinder, who took over from Arun Sharma, represented the country in 1994 and also served as Punjab team captain from 1989-1991.

Mortaza out

Dhaka: Injured Bangladesh captain Mashrafe Mortaza has been ruled out of the ODI series against the West Indies starting later this month, the Bangladesh Cricket Board said on Monday. Mortaza fell awkwardly while bowling on the third day of the first Test earlier this month. An MRI scan confirmed Mortaza had suffered cartilage damage in his right knee.

For the first time more than two sportspersons may be awarded the country's highest sporting award, Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna.

Beijing Games bronze medalists, boxer Vijender Singh and wrestler Sushil Kumar along with four-time women's world boxing champion M C Marykom have been recommended for the Khel Ratna.

Sports ministry sources said on Monday that all the three sportspersons deserve the award for their outstanding performances as none of them could be overlooked.

Last year after Marykom was overlooked for the Khel Ratna, Union Sports Minister M S Gill had assured the Manipuri boxer that she would get her due.

"Marykom has already been assured by the sports ministry and both Vijender and Sushil can't be ignored after their Beijing showing. The selection committee considered all the factors in nominating them, leaving it to the ministry to decide whether all three should be given the Khel Ratna as a special case," the sports official said.

This would not be the first time more than one sportsperson would be receiving the Khel Ratna. Twice in the past two sportspersons were picked for the award. In 1996-97, tennis star Leander Paes and weightlifter Kunjarani Devi were the joint recipients while shooter Anjali Vedpathak and athlete K M Beenamol were given in 2002-03.

The selection committee headed by former table tennis player Indu Puri also nominated badminton sensation Saina Nehwal, the first Indian to win a Super Series event, shooter Ronjan Sodhi and cricketer Gautam Gambhir for the Arjuna Award.

Olympic medalist Sushil's coach Satpal and former All England Badminton champion and Saina's coach Pullela Gopichand are two among the five coaches, who have been nominated for the Dronacharya Award.

Nominated for Khel Ratna, Marykom regrets it came so late

It's been three-year wait for the four-time women's world boxing champion M C Marykom to get nominated for the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award. The Manipuri who was finally nominated for the country's highest sporting award on Monday, however, regrets it has come after so long.

"It's been a long wait for me, I have been applying for the award from the past three years. Despite performing, I wasn't even nominated. I regret that," Marykom, an Arjuna Award winner and a Padmshree, said as a matter of fact.

Holders Australia begin the defence of its ICC Champions Trophy crown against the West Indies in a repeat of the 2006 final.

That match will take place as a day game at The Wanderers, Johannesburg, on Saturday, September 26, and is part of a blockbuster day of action as, later on, India and Pakistan will go head-to-head in a day-night encounter at Centurion Park.

The teams in this year's Champions Trophy will be battling it out for a record prize pool of US $4 million.

The figure is an-almost four-fold increase in the prize-money on the 2004 and 2006 editions of the tournament, which saw a total of US $1.15 million on offer on each of those occasions.

The funds are at stake during a re-modelled short, sharp event of 15 matches in only 14 days in September and October, taking place at two venues -- Centurion Park and The Wanderers.

After winning the toss at the Wanderers and opting to bat, Mumbai recovered from a poor start to reach 149-4 and in reply, Bangalore made 150-1 with 11 balls to spare.

Kallis got off to a cracking start after fellow opener Wassim Jaffer had fallen early on and although he slowed, still reached his half-century off 39 balls.

Uthappa was even quicker, making his fifty off 36 deliveries.

The pair shared 126 runs for the second wicket with Kallis 69 not out from 59 balls, including five fours and two sixes.

Uthappa was unbeaten on 66, having faced 42 deliveries in an innings that included eight fours and two sixes.

Bangalore seamer Dillon du Preez, who returned with 3-32, got his IPL debut off to a dream start, bagging three wickets before conceding a run.

Coming on at first change, Du Preez removed Sachin Tendulkar and Ajinkya Rahane with successive deliveries in his first over.

And in his next, he had JP Duminy caught behind to leave Mumbai reeling at 23-3 before Sanath Jayasuriya and Dwayne Bravo compiled 60 runs for the fourth wicket to stage a recovery.

Sachin Tendulkar today said batsmen need to put up a good total if they are to win matches in the Indian Premier League after going down by nine wickets to Royal Challengers Bangalore here today.

Mumbai Indians recovered from a shaky start thanks to half-centuries from Sanath Jayasuriya and Dwayne Bravo that saw them post 149 for four in their 20 overs.

In response, Jacques Kallis (69) and Robin Uthappa (66) helped Royal Challengers cruise to a nine-wicket victory with 11 balls to spare.

Talking at the post match ceremony, Tendulkar felt they didn't score enough.

"Probably 150 was not enough," said the Mumbai Indian skipper, who failed with the bat, managing just 11.

"We need to put up a good total and play better cricket," said Tendulkar.

The skipper felt that they are not being consistent and urged the boys to lift themselves.

"We won one and lost one. It seems to be becoming a trend. We have to lift ourselves," he said after the defeat that pushed them to sixth in the table with seven points from seven matches.

Royal Challengers captain Anil Kumble praised the bowling performance of Dillon Du Preez, who picked up three wickets for 32 runs including the one of Sachin Tendulkar early on in the innings.

"Preez picking up those wickets early on was crucial. Kallis and Uthappa then batted very well to see the team through," said the leg-spinner, who now has guided the team to back-to-back triumphs ever since taking over the captain's armband from Kevin Pietersen, who is on England duty.

Kumble felt belief in one another helped them script the turnaround that sees them at fourth place with eight points from eight encounters.

"We needed to believe in ourselves. The win against Kolkata Knight Riders gave us a boost and then we won against Kings XI Punjab. We would like to take the momentum forward," said the former India skipper.

he Technical Committee of the Indian Premier League recommended a two-week rehabilitation for Rajasthan Royals pacer Kamran Khan who has been reported for a suspect bowling action.

The IPL Technical Committee met yesterday to review the left-arm pacer's action after which they decided to recommend a two-week rehabilitation for the exciting youngster.

"Based on an examination of the match footage obtained, the Technical Committee have recommended a two-week rehabilitation for Kamran Khan," the IPL authorities said in a statement.

The Technical Committee meeting was attended by former India captains Sunil Gavaskar and Ravi Shastri besides IPL Commissioner Lalit Modi who were joined via a conference call by Anurag Thakur and M A K Pataudi from India.

Kamran was reported by on-field umpires Rudi Koertzen and Gary Baxter after the Royals' match against Chennai Super Kings at the Centurion in Pretoria on Thursday.

After the match was over, footage was obtained and examined by all the three umpires including TV umpire Amish Saheba and it was decided that further action was necessary under the Laws of Cricket section 24/3 that governs the game.

The matter was then referred by the Indian Premier League to the team management of the Rajasthan Royals and the IPL's Technical Committee.

Delhi Daredevils will be overwhelming favourites against Kolkata Knight Riders, in disarray after six losses in eight matches, when the two sides lock horns in an Indian Premier League match here tomorrow.

A defeat against Chennai Super Kings in their last match notwithstanding, the Virender Sehwag-led Daredevils should have it easy tomorrow, given Kolkata's misery in the Twenty20 event so far.

The team's pathetic display has left owner Shah Rukh Khan so disappointed that he refused to come here and support Brendon McCullum and his men until they start winning.

Given Kolkata's form, it seems unlikely that Shah Rukh would make the trip.

To make it worse for them, Kolkata goes into tomorrow's match without Chris Gayle, the West Indian opener who has left for national duty against England.

His departure comes as a huge blow to the team, which desperately needs skipper McCullum and Sourav Ganguly to strike form.

Brad Hodge did well with a half-century against Kings XI Punjab but his solo effort could not win them the match and it is unlikely to do so even in the coming games.

With batsmen putting up a dismal show, Kolkata's bowlers have been left to make amends on most occasions but even the best of efforts by Ishant Sharma has not been able to compensate for the willow-wielders' shoddy performance. Delhi also has its share of problems with Sehwag's form and fitness being a concern. The right-hander picked up a finger injury recently which kept him out of the match against Chennai Super Kings.

Sehwag has been struggling with the bat as well, having scored just 87 runs in the five matches he has played.

His fellow opener Gautam Gambhir has not been in very good touch either and Delhi needs the explosive duo to fire to go far in the tournament.

Much to their relief, David Warner sizzled in his IPL debut and it would be a difficult, if not unfair, job now to drop the explosive Australian.

Delhi's problems in fact pale in comparison to Kolkata's woes. The team's on-field flop-show has taken a toll on the dressing room environment as well and Kolkata seems a house divided.

McCullum is wilting under the pressure of leading a side in turmoil and has already made it known that he would step down if he fails to take Kolkata to the semifinals.

But in a format best described as unpredictable, the laggards cannot be dismissed altogether even if they are up against a team, which has been described by many as the most balanced among the eight in fray.

Defeat in their previous meeting fresh in mind, revenge will fuel Rajasthan Royals' campaign when Shane Warne and his comrades-in-arms take on the Yuvraj Singh-led Kings XI Punjab in the Indian Premier League here tomorrow.

It took Kumar Sangakkara's first fifty of the tournament and Irfan Pathan's all-round show to fashion Kings XI Punjab's 27-run win against the Rajasthan Royals in Cape Town.

Past records, however, would count for little when the sides square off tomorrow at Kingsmead to have another go at each other.

Kings XI didn't have the best of starts in the tournament as they began with back-to-back defeats against Delhi Daredevils and Kolkata Knight Riders in two rain-marred ties.

To their credit, the Mohali outfit showed tremendous resilience and engineered three wins on the trot to put their campaign back on track.

The momentum snapped when the lowly Royal Challengers Bangalore upset their apple cart but once again Yuvraj and his men bounced back by beating the Kolkata Knight Riders yesterday, also settling scores with the side which had beaten them in their first encounter.

In contrast, the defending champions under Warne had a rather rollercoaster ride with agony and ecstasy following each other with amazing regularity.

The opening match debacle against the Royal Challengers Bangalore was followed by the washed out tie against Mumbai Indians. Beating the Knight Riders gave them their first taste of triumph and they went on to get the better of the mighty Delhi Daredevils and redoubtable Deccan Chargers, losing to Kings XI Punjab and Chennai Super Kings in between.

Even though Kings XI have won more matches -- four compared to Rajasthan's three -- in the tournament so far, there is little to choose between the side that cross swords tomorrow.

The Mohali outfit has been served well by their Sri Lankan recruits with Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene bailing out the side in the hour of crisis while Yuvraj's own form has been less than consistent.

In the bowling department, Punjab has found its messiah in Yusuf Abdulla and the burly South African, current purple cap holder, has left no stone unturned to prove his mettle in front of his home crowd.

In contrast, Rajasthan's batting is way too reliant on Yusuf Pathan even though Abhishek Raut has also made his mark.

Never short of ideas, Kolkata Knight Riders coach John Buchanan has now floated the idea of having more than four foreign players in the playing XI of the Indian Premier League sides.

Buchanan said he had raised the issue with the IPL authorities and was hopeful that if not this season, such a thing would be allowed in the third edition of the Twenty20 league.

"It is a question that we have posed to IPL a number of times about the involvement of more players on the field. I have personally mentioned that a number of times," Buchanan said.

"Hopefully IPL will look at that more seriously going forward into next season and beyond," the Australian told reporters after the Knight Riders went down to Kings XI Punjab yesterday.

Buchanan was asked about Mashrafe Mortaza's surprising omission from the playing XI despite the fact that KKR shelled out a whopping USD 600000 to get the Bangladeshi pacer.

"At the moment, we have adopted a batting strategy. So that's where our international effort is. So does that mean that guys that are international bowlers, whether it be (Charl) Langeveldt, Mortaza, (Ajantha) Mendis whoever it might be, their opportunities are limited at this time," Buchanan said in no uncertain terms. Buchanan was also asked whether there would be a change in captaincy after the side's string of poor shows under Brendon McCullum.

"I don't think we need to answer that one. The answer is no," Buchanan said.

Incidentally, McCullum has decided to quit captaincy if the team fails to reach IPL semifinals.

Chennai Super Kings captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni heaved a sigh of relief after his side's thrilling 18-run victory over Delhi Daredevils today but said they have to capitalise on the good starts if they want to continue the winning momentum in the Indian Premier League.

Put into bat, Chennai were all out for 163 thanks mainly to Matthew Hayden (30), Suresh Raina (32) and S Badrinath (45). The lower order including Dhoni himself did not contribute much to the total on a batting pitch at the Wanderers.

"(Matthew) Hayden, (Suresh) Raina and Badrinath batted well they gave a good start but (Albie) Morkel, me and the lower order could not capitalise on that," Dhoni said after the match.

"We are happy that we beat a good side like Daredevils. But we have to capitalise on the starts if we want to keep on the momentum," he added after his side's third win from seven matches in the tournament.

He said the match was evenly poised till the 15th over but was confident a couple of wickets would tilt the balance in his side's favour.

"The match could have gone either way from the 15th over. But I was hoping that a wicket or two after that we would be in and that happen," Dhoni said.

Asked about man-of-match Shadab Jakati's performance of 4/24, Dhoni said, "It is good that a left-arm spinner in our team is doing well. Spinners are doing well in every team. On good batting pitches a left-arm spinner will do well." Daredevils captain Gautam Gambhir felt 164 was an achievable target on the batting pitch at Wanderers.

"160 plus was gettable on this wicket and we should have won the match. Winning is always good but it is a game of cricket. We can't be complacent and hopefully we will reach the semifinals," said Gambhir, who stood in for injured Virender Sehwag.

Asked whether his side missed Sehwag, Gambhir said, "The situation may have been different had he been at the top of order. Having him at the top takes away a lot of pressure from the lower order," he added.

Jakati, who took 4/24 in the match, said he was just trying to have variety in his bowling.

"I was waiting for my chance to play. (Stephen) Fleming, Venky (Venkatesh Prasad) and of course Dhoni said the important thing is to have variety," he said.

"I was just trying to bowl wicket to wicket and mixing slow and quick deliveries," said the 28-year-old Goan.

The controversies surrounding the Kolkata Knight Riders never seems to die down after their Bollywood hero turned team owner Shah Rukh Khan and coach John Buchanan ganged up to oust former Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly from the helm and replace him with the present New Zealand vice captain Brendon McCullum.

One fails to understand Buchanan's logic really because he was the one who mooted the multi-captain theory but ended up naming just a single captain for the whole of Indian Premier League's (IPL) second edition after reaching South Africa.

Though Buchanan has been credited (small portion)with the success of the mighty Australian team of the late 90s and early 2000s, his knowledge of Twenty20 cricket is very limited and to replace the proven ex-India captain and one of the most explosive left-handed opening batsmen (remember Ganguly's exploits with Sachin Tendulkar) in One-Dayers with an inexperienced leader (McCullum) is a pathetic move to say the least.

And Shah Rukh Khan's interference (by supporting Buchanan's every move) with the selection of the captain and team will only add more confusion to the already volatile situation in the KKR's ranks and it is a pity that Ganguly, who has been rated as India's best captain before he announced his retirement from International cricket last year, and an iconic player has been stabbed in the back by his own people on a foreign land.

Everybody, including the players and journalists, were given the impression that Buchanan's senseless decisions (by former cricketers including the Aussies) were curbed in the bud before the team left on its African Safari. But the cunning Buchanan dropped a bomb shell after reaching the South African shores that McCullum would replace Ganguly as skipper for the whole season.

With this move, the players' confidence in the KKR camp, has totally been shattered because every member connected with the team, apart from Khan and Buchanan, knows that the players have more faith in Ganguly than any other player as skipper, including the present Aussie skipper Ricky Ponting, who has pulled out of the IPL due to fear of burnout.

The point both Khan and Buchanan has completely missed out is that for a team to be successful there should be unity and mutual respect for each other like the present Indian team under Mahendra Singh Dhoni has been proving over and over again.

Agreed McCullum is an explosive opening batsmen ideal for the T20 format but does he have the experience and the leadership quality that Ganguly has or for that matter does he command the same respect that the 'Prince of Kolkata'? Definitely not.

It is not just KKR but even the teams like Bangalore Royal Challengers, owned by liquor baron Vijay Mallya, who has replaced experienced Rahul Dravid with former England skipper Kevin Pietersen as skipper and Hyderabad Deccan Chargers, owned by publishing house (Deccan Chronicle) who have opted for retired Aussie stumper Adam Gilchrist to V V S Laxman at the helm will find the going tough in the second editions simply because Pietersen will be available for a handful of matches while Gilchrist is retired and rusty while both Dravid and Laxman were in great nick in New Zealand respectively.

Some people may argue that both Dravid and Laxman were proven Test players alone and forget the fact that Dravid was the highest run-getter for his team while Laxman was unlucky to miss most of the action because of injury and their experience would have been invaluable for the team anywhere on this earth.

Coming back to McCullum, he not only lacks the experience and leadership qualities of Ganguly, he will surly be burdened by the additional responsibility of the captaincy and the persistent postmortem of his actions by the Indian media and the continuous demands to produce positive results by his owner and coach.

To meet these demands successfully, he needs to get hundred and ten percent cooperation from his teammates - seven Indian and three foreign players - who by now will be so confused that they would prefer leaning on Ganguly's guidance more than anything else as their loyalty stays with the southpaw than with anyone else, including the so called superstar of Hindi films.

Though it is very difficult to predict the outcome of a Twenty20 match, one can confidently predict that KKR will be very, very lucky if they don't finish with the wooden spoon this year.

Let's wish Khan and Buchanan all the best while sympathizing with Ganguly and McCullum, one for losing the captaincy and the other for getting it under pressure-cocker situation.

The BCCI launched the Indian Premier League (IPL) on the lines of football’s English Premier League and the National Basketball League (NBA) of the US.

The IPL is a professional Twenty20 cricket league created and promoted by the BCCI and backed by the ICC. The Twenty20 league is set to debut in April 2008, with eight teams comprising a minimum of 16 players each. The league will last for 44 days and will involve 59 matches.

The IPL works on a franchise-system based on the American style of hiring players and transfers. These franchises were put for auction, where the highest bidder won the rights to own the team, representing each city.

The auction for the same took place on January 24, 2008 and the total base price for the auction was $400 million. The auction went on to fetch $723.59 million.

The Mumbai franchise owned by Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) was the most expensive franchise - fetching $111.9 million closely followed by Vijay Mallya’s United Breweries which paid $111.6 million for the Bangalore franchise .

Media house Deccan Chronicle won the Hyderabad chapter of the IPL for $107 million, while India Cements’ Chennai franchise cost $91 million.

Bollywood also made its presence felt with two of its leading stars bagging the ownership of their respective teams - Shah Rukh Khan and Juhi Chawla’s Red Chillies Entertainment buying out Kolkata for $75.09, while Preity Zinta and her beau Ness Wadia bought the Mohali team for $76 million.

GMR , the infrastructure development group which who are involved in a project for revamping the Delhi airport, bagged the ownership of the Delhi team for $84 million and the Emerging Media , consisting of its CEO Fraser Castellino, Manoj Badale and Lachlan Murdoch and other investors won the rights for the Jaipur franczhise for $67 million.

1) Bangalore Royal Challengers: The Bangalore team was bought by Vijay Mallya’s UB Group for $111.6 million to own the team for 10 years. ‘Icon player’ Rahul Dravid is the captain of Bangalore Royal Challengers. Team India’s bowling coach, Venkatesh Prasad is the coach of the team.

2) Kings XI Punjab: The Mohali team was bought by Bollywood diva Preity Zinta, her industrialist beau Ness Wadia, along with renowned industrialists Karan Paul and Mohit Burman for $76 million for a period of 10 years. ‘Icon player’ Yuvraj Singh is the captain of Kings XI Punjab. Australia’s Tom Moddy is the coach of the team.

3) Chennai Super Kings: The Chennai team was bought by India Cements for $91 million to own the team for 10 years. Team India ODI and T20 skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni is the captain of Chennai Super Kings. Former South Africa cricket team captain Kepler Wessels is the coach of the team.

4) Kolkata Knight Riders: The Kolkata team is owned by Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan, actress Juhi Chawla and her husband Jay Mehta for $75.09 million for a 10-year period. ‘Icon player’ Sourav Ganguly is the captain of Kolkata Knight Riders. Australia’s John Buchanan is the coach of the team.

* Title Sponsorship Rights: On February 13 2008, Indian real estate developer DLF Universal secured exclusive rights to the IPL title sponsorship worth Rs 200 crore (over $50 million) for five years.

* Television Rights: On January 14 2008, it was announced that a consortium consisting of India’s Sony Television network and Singapore-based World Sports Group secured the rights of the IPL. The record deal has a duration of ten years at a cost of $1.026 billion.

* On February 20 2008 , the auction of 77 players took place in Mumbai. Team India ODI and Twenty20 skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Australian all-rounder Andrew Symonds emerged the costliest Indian and overseas players respectively.

* Each team will play the other seven teams home and away, the top four teams at the end of the group stages will proceed through to the semi-finals. The first match is slated for April 18 between Team Bangalore and Team Kolkata.

* Team Composition: All teams must have at least four players from their respective Catchment Areas and four Under-22 players. The players from Catchment Areas could be an iconic player, a Ranji player or an U-22 player.

Each team can buy a maximum of eight overseas players but only four would be able to take the field in a match.
